Our civil partnership dissolution service
Dissolving a civil partnership
At Cullimore Dutton, we recognise that ending a civil partnership can be emotional and difficult. Alongside the personal challenges, the legal aspects can feel complex and overwhelming, particularly when financial matters or children are involved.
Since April 2022, civil partners have been able to apply for dissolution under the no-fault system. This means there is no requirement to assign blame – partners must only confirm that the relationship has ‘irretrievably broken down.’ This change has made the legal process more straightforward and less contentious.
With years of experience helping clients dissolve civil partnerships, our team will provide clear guidance from start to finish. We handle everything from the initial application to securing the Conditional Order and Final Order, ensuring each stage is handled efficiently and sensitively.
If you would like to dissolve your civil partnership and are concerned about protecting your legal rights, please get in touch with our expert family law solicitors today.
Financial settlements in civil partnership dissolution
When ending a civil partnership, dividing finances fairly is one of the most important considerations. Reaching a settlement that safeguards your future is essential, whether this involves savings, pensions, property, or shared investments.
Where possible, we help clients negotiate financial agreements outside of court through negotiation or mediation. If an amicable resolution cannot be reached, we offer strong representation in court to ensure financial arrangements are resolved appropriately.
If you had previously entered into a postnuptial agreement, sometimes referred to as a post-civil partnership agreement, we can help you review this when reaching a financial settlement if appropriate.
Our approach is practical and strategic. We ensure that your financial interests are protected and that you secure the best possible outcome. Contact us today to discuss financial arrangements following a civil partnership dissolution.
Child arrangements
If you have children, their well-being will be a key concern when dissolving a civil partnership. Deciding where they will live and how child contact with both parents will work can be challenging, particularly if there are differing views on what is best for them.
Our experienced family law solicitors help families reach child arrangements that work for everyone involved. We encourage cooperation through mediation and other alternative dispute resolution methods to keep the process as smooth as possible.
If parents are unable to agree, we can assist in applying for a Child Arrangements Order through court proceedings, establishing a legally binding arrangement that prioritises your child’s best interests.
High net worth clients
For couples with substantial assets, the dissolution of a civil partnership can involve complex financial considerations. Property, business interests, pensions, and offshore investments all require careful evaluation to ensure a fair settlement.
We work closely with financial specialists to assess and divide assets appropriately. If there are concerns about hidden wealth or non-disclosure, we take firm action to uncover and address these issues.
Our solicitors provide strategic legal advice to safeguard your financial position and secure your long-term interests.

Frequently asked questions about civil partnership dissolution
How do you dissolve a civil partnership?
If you would like to dissolve a civil partnership, you must apply for a civil partnership dissolution by completing the appropriate application form (D8). You’ll need to state that your civil partnership has irretrievably broken down and supply a copy or a certified copy of your civil partnership certificate.
Once the Court has approved your application, you’ll need to wait for 20 weeks before applying for a Conditional Order. Upon receiving the Conditional Order, you’ll need to wait 6 weeks and 1 day before applying for a Final Order. Your civil partnership is only legally dissolved once you have received the Final Order.
It is possible to complete the process online through the UK Gov website. However, it is advised that you first seek the support of a civil partnership dissolution solicitor to ensure you are legally compliant throughout the process.
A solicitor will be able to provide legal advice to help you protect your interest and avoid process delays. They will also be able to support you with related legal matters, including arrangements for children and reaching a financial settlement.

How much does it cost to dissolve a civil partnership?
The application fee is £593. If you are receiving legal support from a solicitor, the fees will depend on the level of legal assistance you require.
At Cullimore Dutton, we will provide an accurate fee quote at the beginning based on your requirements. For more information about our fees, please contact our team.
Is it easier to dissolve a civil partnership than a marriage?
Dissolving a civil partnership involves the same process as ending a marriage. Therefore, neither is likely to be easier than the other. How smoothly the dissolution process goes will vary according to the couple's circumstances.
To prevent delays in the application process, and to navigate any issues, working with an expert solicitor is recommended.
