Who Will Look After Your Children If the Worst Happens?
If you have young children, appointing a guardian in your will is one of the most important decisions you can make. It ensures that, if anything happens to you, the right person is legally responsible for their care.
As a parent of 3 children, I understand what a difficult decision this can be. In fact my husband and I changed our wills to reflect a change in our choice of guardians. Over time, the needs of our children changed and the ability of the guardians to look after our children changed and so we needed to make amendments. As always, even if you have a will in place it’s important to keep it under review!
When choosing a guardian, consider:
✔ Their values, lifestyle, and parenting style
✔ Their ability to provide a stable and loving home
✔ Their location and relationship with your child
✔ Their financial situation—will they need support? It is possible to advance funds for needs of minor children, however it might be appropriate to have different trustees (the people managing the finances) and the people caring for the children).
✔ Their willingness to take on this responsibility
Without a named guardian, the courts will decide who cares for your children—potentially someone you wouldn’t have chosen. You can also set up financial arrangements to help your chosen guardian, ensuring your child’s future is secure.
If you haven’t reviewed your will recently or need to put one in place, now is the time. Let’s make sure your children’s future is in safe hands.
