Hi, I am Sarah Cheers. I joined Cullimore Dutton earlier this year, and I’m sharing this series of brief insights into my time as a paralegal.

In this my final post, I look at what to do with your Will once it is written.

I am often asked where is the best and most secure place to store a Will? In my experience when you make a Will, many solicitors will offer to store it for you, they may also offer to store other legal documents such as property deeds etc. which ensures that you know where they are. They are also away from risk of interference/destruction by third parties.

However, what happens if that practice closes down, relocates or goes into administration?

Throughout my career I have seen this happen several times. In my experience the client is not always informed of the change in circumstance or where their documents have been moved to, which has often been to a storage unit in a distant part of the country. In several cases this has become a problem and retrieving the Will has proven difficult, resulting in unnecessary panic and stress for the client.

Here at Cullimore Dutton, all of our clients’ Wills are stored securely on site, in our Chester City Centre offices. This provides our clients with the peace of mind that comes with knowing your Will is local to you – this is a service we have offered throughout our 200+ year history and we hold several generations of family Wills. In addition, we offer all of our Will clients the opportunity to register their Will with Certainty, the National Will register providing an additional digital record of the Will’s location.

I have seen the upset which is created when clients are unable to locate their loved one’s Will at an already distressing time. If you would like to discuss moving your Will and storing it with us free of charge, I would be delighted to assist you. It is a very simple process and I will do the majority of the work for you. Simply call 01244 356 789 or email info@cullimoredutton.co.uk.

I hope you have found this series of posts of interest, until next time…

Cheers, Sarah
